Choosing and enjoying new "good fit" books for our book boxes

In thinking about good-fit books for Kindergartners...do you know about the Welcome to Reading Kits at Multnomah County Library?  Even if you live in Washington or Clackamas County you are eligible for a Multnomah County Library card...I have cards for all three counties! Hillsdale Library is the branch closest to OES. Welcome To Reading Kits are organized by four levels: Starting Out, Building Skills, On My Own and Reading More. The bags are readily available in the children's section at all of the MCL branches, and each level/color has several bags organized by theme. You can also put them on hold to be delivered to your closest branch.  In each bag you'll find an assortment of high-quality titles at that level on the given theme (both fiction and nonfiction). Considering how many books you need to keep fresh titles available for early readers, these are a terrific resource!

This week we also participated in a Kindergarten-Primary Strategy Workshop around the social problem-solving strategy "Get Some Information," particularly useful to the children when they want to join a game already in progress. Some of their suggestions for how to get information included the questions "What are you playing?" "How do you play this?" "How can I join?" and "Can you show me how to play?"
  .
One of our small groups of children from mixed Kindergarten classes explored this strategy by learning some new tag games and explaining to one another how to play. If you find yourself at a park or picnic this summer with a lot of kids, you may want to try Hot Dog Tag, Band Aid Tag, Octopus Tag, Animal Tag or Oonch Neech tag! You can find descriptions of these and more here

One playground highlight...Shaarav has been wanting to learn how to climb on top of the monkey bars, and Grayson and Steven have been enthusiastic teachers. After a few days of practice and attempts, this milestone happened on Friday!
This is just one of many examples this week of the ways the children are supporting and encouraging each other to try new things, take risks, explore new interests.  They serve each other as both teachers and learners, one of the best outcomes of a year together!

Looking Forward, Looking Back

This time of year is full of opportunities for looking forward and looking back. Our biggest highlight from last week was the chance to see Ms. Deborah! She dropped by to let us know how she was doing and to wish the children well on their last school days and summer adventures.    .  As we think about summer, hopefully some of our reading strategy bookmarks have made it home to you! We learn a lot of reading strategies but have been concentrating on accuracy   strategies or strategies for reading accurately. So far the children have learned the strategies we call Skippy Frog, Lips the Fish, Stretchy Snake and Eagle Eye. They will soon be practicing Flippy Dolphin, Chunky Monkey and Tryin' Lion! Each of the strategy bookmarks coming home have brief descriptions of the strategies so you can encourage them in your readers at home as you read together this summer. You can also find a quick reference poster here.   .   As important as a...

Introductions

You are already familiar with Ms. Anna and Ms. Kirstin , but we wanted to take a moment to introduce you to two other important people to Room 12, Ms. Tami and Ms. Peterson! Tami Kizziar will be our lead teacher the week of May 21st and again June 5-13th. In addition to serving as a highly-requested PreK-Grade 5 guest teacher at OES, she has served in a volunteer capacity as the Counseling Center Volunteer at Lincoln High School and as an algebra tutor for Open Meadow Alternative School. Before staying at home with her own children (her youngest graduates from high school the week of May 29th!) she was an elementary school teacher in California. You can reach her at tamarakizziar@gmail.com . Caley Peterson  is a familiar face at OES and has been one of our guest teachers for a number of years, including long-term positions for teachers on sabbatical or leave. She has a Masters in Teaching with an emphasis in Early Childhood Development from Pacific University, has taught ...
