We had a great week with Ms. Tami and Ms. Anna! Highlights included another visit from Mrs. Marshall and our buddies, a bonus outdoor studio opportunity with Ms. Laura and story problem work in math.

Choosing and enjoying new "good fit" books for our book boxes
In thinking about good-fit books for Kindergartners...do you know about the Welcome to Reading Kits at Multnomah County Library? Even if you live in Washington or Clackamas County you are eligible for a Multnomah County Library card...I have cards for all three counties! Hillsdale Library is the branch closest to OES. Welcome To Reading Kits are organized by four levels: Starting Out, Building Skills, On My Own and Reading More. The bags are readily available in the children's section at all of the MCL branches, and each level/color has several bags organized by theme. You can also put them on hold to be delivered to your closest branch. In each bag you'll find an assortment of high-quality titles at that level on the given theme (both fiction and nonfiction). Considering how many books you need to keep fresh titles available for early readers, these are a terrific resource!
This week we also participated in a Kindergarten-Primary Strategy Workshop around the social problem-solving strategy "Get Some Information," particularly useful to the children when they want to join a game already in progress. Some of their suggestions for how to get information included the questions "What are you playing?" "How do you play this?" "How can I join?" and "Can you show me how to play?"
.
One of our small groups of children from mixed Kindergarten classes explored this strategy by learning some new tag games and explaining to one another how to play. If you find yourself at a park or picnic this summer with a lot of kids, you may want to try Hot Dog Tag, Band Aid Tag, Octopus Tag, Animal Tag or Oonch Neech tag! You can find descriptions of these and more here.
One playground highlight...Shaarav has been wanting to learn how to climb on top of the monkey bars, and Grayson and Steven have been enthusiastic teachers. After a few days of practice and attempts, this milestone happened on Friday!

This is just one of many examples this week of the ways the children are supporting and encouraging each other to try new things, take risks, explore new interests. They serve each other as both teachers and learners, one of the best outcomes of a year together!
